The Villanova Office of Health Promotion and a Holistic Look at Health
By Mia Clingham
Last year I served as a student facilitator for the Health Living and Learning Communitas. I was exposed to the many resources within the Office of Health Promotion, specifically through working alongside Director and Associated Director Stacy Andes and Kristy McCarthy. I found myself reflecting on all the valuable knowledge and insight I gained during my time serving; so here is a deep dive into a super public, but also somewhat hidden gem on Villanova’s campus so you too can learn invaluable information.
Residing within the larger Health Center building, this space focuses on a holistic view of health; the group is founded on establishing well-being in six different areas: social, emotional, physical, intellectual, cultural, emotional, and spiritual. Their office utilizes peer-to-peer programs for discussions and has a close relationship with the university Counseling Center for those looking for further resources. They have a wide range of both ongoing and special events including some of my favorites: ‘Where is the Love? Wednesdays Pet Therapy’, connection with a sleep coach, and their free online Mental Health and Well-Being course. But my truly favorite part of this office is the cozy ambiance, it’s like your living room from home, complete with de-stressors like kinetic sand and a zen garden.
This office has allowed me to realize that just because you don’t fit the conventional version of needing a ‘sick day’, doesn’t mean you don’t deserve, or need, to take a break. It is important to pause and reevaluate your relationship with the concept of well-being.
Villanova’s campus is an awesome place and I might be its biggest advocate. But, at times, it can be overwhelming to be constantly surrounded by so many incredible people, activities, and involvements. I have found a great outlet in the Office of Health Promotion and its dedicated staff. Through my time exploring the many resources within this program, it is clear that a holistic understanding of health is the only way to live a truly healthy life. I sincerely hope you take advantage of this resource.
