The Power of Group Fitness
By Molly Mook
Moving your body is important. I think most people would agree with that statement. However, finding a consistent workout routine is difficult, and an attainable, enjoyable, and beneficial exercise program looks and feels different for everyone.
I have a passion for fitness and wellness, so much so that I’ve become a certified group exercise instructor so that I can help others find a workout routine that makes them feel strong, confident, and consistent. If you are trying to mix up your routine, or if you are just beginning your fitness journey, group fitness is a great option to consider.
Why I Love Group Fitness:
It offers a positive atmosphere and supportive community – Working out in a group of like-minded individuals who are all on their own fitness journeys is inspiring. You will meet qualified instructors, see friendly faces in class each session, and feel more and more confident and strong after each class you complete. You have the opportunity to receive positive words, shoutouts, or even advice and feedback from instructors. You can learn modifications and how to “make your workout work for you.” Often times, employees and instructors learn your first name so that you feel valued and part of the supportive community.
It offers accountability – Even signing up for a class creates the feeling that you have an “appointment” with yourself. It’s scheduled into your calendar, which is a helpful tip for sticking to your workout routine. You can also hold yourself accountable by signing up for the same class as a friend, that way your friend is counting on you to go together.
It provides a structured workout – A group exercise class provides an opportunity for you to learn and gain confidence in the workout realm, whether in strength training, cardio, spin, pilates, etc. You don’t have to think about your workout plan. All you need to do is show up. This takes some work out of the challenge of keeping up your exercise routine.
It’s motivating – Taking a group workout class is similar to having a coach. Your instructor leads you, motivates you, and pushes you to do your best. It’s nice to have that outside push to keep going as you try to fight your own mind.
There is always variety – There are a ton of options for group fitness right at your fingertips. Group exercise includes everything from bootcamp to spin to pilates to kickboxing to yoga. I will acknowledge that it is a privilege to attend these classes, as they can be expensive. However, there are often student deals and free trial deals. For example, Villanova has on-campus group fitness classes with affordable student packages. There are also many studios right in Bryn Mawr and the surrounding area. Some studios have virtual or on-demand classes for a less-expensive and more accessible option.
It’s a ton of Fun – Lastly, one of the top reasons I love group fitness is that it’s FUN! There’s loud, upbeat music. It’s a safe space to sweat, try new things, and learn. And, it’s a helpful way to make new friends and stay connected with current ones.
