Three Ways to Get Better Sleep

Three Ways to Get Better Sleep

By Emma Sandora

As college students, it is easy to disregard sleep as we prioritize completing homework and checking things off of our long to-do lists. Yet, getting more sleep can actually be the factor that allows you to be more productive and complete your assignments faster. Sleep is one of the most important things for our bodies! Here are three ways to get better sleep:

Make your space as comfortable as possible. I know it sounds silly, but creating an environment that you cannot wait to return to can encourage you to sleep. For example, I like to make my bed in the morning so that it looks comfortable when I am ready to lie down at night. Investing in good lighting is so important in creating a relaxing space. I also use a light that projects onto my ceiling and makes my bedroom feel cozier. This simple trick helps me to get comfortable and ready for a good night’s sleep.

Set a schedule and stick to it! This is arguably the most important way to get better sleep but one of the hardest things to do at our stage in life. Busy schedules can create late nights, resulting in a hectic sleep schedule. Something you can control is waking up around the same time every day. Creating a schedule for going to sleep and waking up will allow your body to recognize when it is time to relax. I have found that I tend to get a better sleep when I stick to a consistent schedule.

Clear your mind before closing your eyes with journaling, meditation, etc. It is important to go to bed without racing thoughts. I tend to struggle with thinking about what assignments I have to do the next day and what exams I need to study for especially. If I feel myself overthinking, I’ll grab my journal and write down my thoughts. Once they are out of my head, I find myself in a better position to relax and fall asleep. Not only do I fall asleep faster, but I wake up feeling more refreshed.

These suggestions will allow you to have the best night of sleep possible and set yourself up for success!
