Small Ways to Brighten Your Day

Small Ways to Brighten Your Day

By Lauren Jones

We are often plagued by the idea that in order to have a “good day” every single thing must go our way. In reality, a “good day” is defined by the little things that make us appreciate how remarkable life can be.

You are in full control of your own life, which is both a relieving and overwhelming fact. The beauty in this is that you have the ability to incorporate small habits into your daily life to make it brighter.

Here is a list of small ways to brighten your everyday:

  • Thank the universe for waking you up in the morning (start the day with gratitude!)

  • Set aside time to list the things you are grateful for in the morning.

  • Create a playlist of feel-good music for any occasion.

  • Sit in the sun and soak in its warmth.

  • Go on a walk surrounded by nature (check out Stoneleigh if you live near campus!)

  • Treat yourself to your favorite drink (maybe try out a new café spot like Gryphon Cafe or Green Engine Coffee Co.)

  • Do something kind for someone else.

  • Buy yourself some flowers!

  • Text a friend to grab a meal together.

  • Look through old photo albums or even your “favorites” album in Google Photos

  • Do something spontaneous!

  • Check something (even the smallest of tasks) off your to-do list for tomorrow so you feel ahead of the game.

  • Facetime a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while.

  • Reflect on how far you have come in your life. It is necessary to take a break and appreciate all the work you have done to get to where you are. Be proud without worrying about the next step for a moment.

  • Try something you have never done before!

  • Move your body by walking, running, biking, swimming, or doing yoga. You will likely feel so much better after!

  • Compliment someone – you just might make their day.

  • Smile at a stranger– it’s contagious!

  • Plan a fun event for the future. It is so important to have things to look forward to!

  • Wear an outfit that makes you feel confident.

  • Call your family (they miss you!)

  • Visit a body of water. The ocean really does have healing powers.

  • Sing loudly in the car

  • Tell someone you love them!

The actions on this list do not take a large amount of your time, but they will leave a lasting impact on your mood and mentality. Perhaps these little habits aren’t so “little” after all.
