How to Stay Moving During the Winter

How to Stay Moving During the Winter

As winter approaches, working out can become less and less appealing. Between deciding how many layers to wear and if roads are safe to travel, it can be hard to get in the mood to workout. Regardless of this, some tips for working out outside as the weather starts to get colder are:

  1. Wear layers on your top half: If you are hot you can always wrap a long sleeve around your waist or put gloves in the waist of your pants. If you wear thicker pants and get hot, you can’t really take them off.

  2. Check the weather: Don’t only look at the temperature but also check if it is going to rain or snow.

  3. Step outside!! Look at the roads and feel out the weather.

  4. Use an app like find my run to make/find a route where there are sidewalks. Sidewalks keep you off the road and are often cleared when it snows.

Although these little things can help make working outside a little more enjoyable/easier, there are also a ton of other things you can do that don’t require you to go outside, including:

  1. Workout classes: There are a ton of workout classes offered at Villanova and also around it such as Bulldog Yoga, [solidcore], Orangetheory, Soul Cycle, LSF Pilates, or barre3

  2. Check out the gyms on campus. These are free and have a ton of different cardio/weight machines and also free weights.

  3. Do something in your room or living room. YouTube never fails to have awesome at home workouts. These can include pilates, yoga, HIIT, or even dance videos.

It is really easy to want to stay inside on a cold winter day and avoid a hard workout but it is always good to get your body moving even if it is just for 20-30 minutes. I hope these ideas help you to stay motivated and to keep moving!
