Whip Up Some Chocolate Hummus
By Fran DeNunzio
I have a major sweet tooth, especially when it comes to chocolate. Unfortunately, I can’t eat chocolate all the time, but thankfully, there is a healthier sweet treat to satisfy my chocolate cravings. That treat is chocolate hummus! It might sound a little strange at first glance, considering that hummus is typically reserved for savory snacks, but chocolate hummus is a surprisingly sweet and tasty form of the classic dip and spread.
Chocolate hummus can be found in stores, but it’s just as easy to make it yourself as it is to go and buy it! This recipe is super versatile and can be customized to fit your preferences depending on the taste and consistency you prefer and what ingredients you might have.
Recipe for Chocolate Hummus
Ingredients:
1 can of garbanzo beans or 1 can of black beans
4 T of unsweetened cocoa powder
3 - 4 T of honey, maple syrup, or agave
½ tsp of vanilla extract
⅛ - ¼ tsp of salt (depending on if the beans come with added salt)
2 tsp of coconut oil (optional)
1-2 T of water (optional)
Steps:
Prepare your beans: Taking the beans of your choice, strain and rinse them three times. If you are using garbanzo beans, remove the skin by pinching the beans between your index finger and thumb.
Using a food processor or blender, combine all of the ingredients, with the exception of the coconut oil and water. Blend until all of the ingredients are incorporated and the mixture is smooth.
If after tasting the hummus you want a creamier flavor, add the coconut oil. If you would like a thinner consistency for your hummus, add the water. Blend until fully combined.
If needed, add more sweetener, salt, coconut oil, or water to fit your taste and consistency preferences.
Enjoy! Chocolate hummus can be eaten alone, but it also pairs well with many foods. I recommend trying it with strawberries, pretzels, bananas, or graham crackers.
