COVID-Safe Holiday Activities

COVID-Safe Holiday Activities

By Julia Valenti

As we all know, Christmas is probably going to look pretty different this year. However, just because large gatherings cannot happen doesn’t mean we have to give up on celebrating entirely. Here are some pandemic-approved activities to keep holiday traditions alive this holiday season.

Fire Pit Gatherings

Using an outdoor fire pit is the perfect way to combine safety and socializing without sacrificing either. Invite a small group of friends over to sit around the fire and make smores, listen to Christmas music, drink hot chocolate, and share stories around the fire. Make sure to bring loads of blankets and winter gear to make the event extra cozy! This festive activity will help you to get into the Christmas spirit, while also adding some much-needed familiarity to your current social regime.

Christmas Light Tours

For me, it never truly feels like Christmas until I drive around my town and see the rows of houses decked in vibrant colors, glowing and twinkling in succession. Decorating your house is an easy way to transform your home into your own winter wonderland, and spread Christmas cheer among your community. While you can simply admire the lights in your own neighborhood, there are also organized tours to be found in local parks, downtowns, and other venues. These light displays offer dazzling views and even performances to be enjoyed while never having to leave the comfort of your car. Make sure to check out what your area has to offer this season!

Making Homemade Gifts

At the end of the day, Christmas is really about showing your loved ones how much they mean to you. There is no better way to do this than making special, personalized gifts for your friends and family. Put all of those hobbies you dabbled in over quarantine to good use, whether it be baking, DIY crafts, or art! Not only will this provide you with a fun and rewarding activity to pass your time, but recipients will definitely appreciate the extra thought and effort. Moreover, you could also arrange an exchange to include your friends in the gift-giving process.

Holiday Movies

Whether it be a cheesy Hallmark film or a timeless classic, Christmas movies are a fool-proof way to lift your mood and get into the holiday spirit (or at least remind you of simpler times). This year, many streaming platforms are offering watch party services so you can have a virtual Christmas movie viewing with your friends. Grab some snacks and Christmas pajamas and make a night of it! If that's not for you, then many places are offering drive-in screenings of holiday movie favorites so you can all watch together in person.

So, there you have it! Hopefully this list will help to make our holiday traditions affected by this year feel a little more normal, and bring people together in this unconventional Christmas season. Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday!
