Why You Need a Nighttime Routine
By Lauren Martyn
The transition from a carefree summer into college life can be tough, especially for freshmen like myself. Coming into college, I felt as though my whole world had been turned upside down. I was 100 miles from home and no longer in my childhood bedroom surrounded by everything that felt familiar. I never had to manage living in a new environment all by myself, and after the first week of classes, my workload had started to pile up. With so much change, I noticed my anxiety starting to significantly increase. However, I quickly realized that with just a few small shifts, I could overcome this stress. I am someone who is very routine-oriented, and I found that sticking to a nightly routine allowed me to smoothly transition into college life and make the most out of my days.
There is actually science behind having a nighttime routine--it has been proven to impact your performance and behavior significantly the following day. Having a routine at night can allow you to relax and unwind from the busy day you may have experienced, as well as get ready for the day ahead of you. Completing tasks every night actually can help alleviate your stress and rid your mind of the lingering thoughts that may keep you up at night. As a result, you will not only be getting more sleep, but you will be getting a better quality of sleep, leaving you feeling more rested. When you sleep a full, uninterrupted eight hours every night, you are doing yourself a favor. This improved quantity and quality of sleeping hours has been proven by the National Sleep Foundation to decrease anxiety in many, as well as lower your risk of diabetes and obesity. So, why wouldn't you want to partake in a nightly routine that is overflowing with benefits?
Your nighttime routine does not have to be complex. It can actually be quite simple! Nighttime routines are totally individual, so you can adjust your routine to fit your preferences and find what works best!
Here are some of my favorite things I have implemented into my nighttime routine!
Putting down the phone
Putting your phone down 30 minutes to an hour before bed is a great way to relax your mind. Oftentimes, we stay up late scrolling on TikTok or texting friends. By taking away the distractions, we can ensure our brain is not being stimulated right before bed.
Taking a warm bath or shower
This is a great way to relax your muscles and allow yourself to prepare to fall asleep. The warm water can help change your body's core temperature, which helps signal to the body that it's time for bed.
Indulging in a skincare routine
Having a nighttime skincare routine is one of the best forms of self-care as it can help calm the body and prepare for sleep.
Listening to a chill playlist
Listening to relaxing music can be comforting for many, and putting on a chill playlist before bed can actually help you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly!
Getting into bed with tea
Drinking a warm beverage before bed is a great way to unwind. Some amazing herbal teas can include chamomile, lemon-ginger, or lavender!
Reading a book
Reading your favorite novel is another great way to calm the mind!
Meditating/journaling
Reflecting on the day you had is such an amazing way to relieve stress and let go of any tension you may be holding. Journaling or listening to a guided meditation are some of my favorite things to do at night to relieve anxiety.
Having a nighttime routine is so important to ensure you are getting quality sleep and are able to enjoy each and every day ahead of you!
