Discovering Group Fitness on Campus

Discovering Group Fitness on Campus

By Ava LaSasso

Before coming to college I was on a dance team for ten years, so workouts for me came in the form of dance classes. I was used to an instructor’s guidance, so the idea of going to Davis to workout on my own was honestly intimidating. But then I saw a flyer for group fitness classes in the Commons and I thought I would give them a try!

I went by myself to yoga, abs classes, and rhythmic spin classes and I loved them all! This was my first time ever trying spin and it has become my new favorite type of workout. In rhythmic classes, you bike to the beat of the music and follow the instructor's cues to increase resistance, sit or stand, and even throw in some fun dance motions. Towards the end of class, there is always one song dedicated to you, which means that you can ride it however you want. Sometimes while this motivational song plays, the instructor will talk about something that has inspired her recently or give words of encouragement for the week ahead. Somehow it is always just what I need to hear. I leave every class not only feeling good physically but also mentally empowered and encouraged.I started attending classes with friends and it quickly became a part of our weekly routines! It has become something that I look forward to even during the busiest weeks to rejuvenate and reset.

It is never too late to sign up for group fitness classes. You can purchase a Group Fitness package using your wildcard at the Commons Group Fitness Studio in Cannon Hall.

There is a wide range of classes offered such as spin, yoga, Pilates, Zumba, and weight training. Classes are offered every weekday as well as a spin class on Sunday afternoons. Sometimes classes even have fun themes like glow yoga! These classes are much more reasonably priced than other area gyms and yoga studios around the area and are easily accessible to students on campus.

Class Packages:

Single class - $10

6 classes - $25

12 classes - $45

24 classes - $80

In addition to taking Group Fitness classes at Nova, I have gotten more involved in the department itself and I now work as the Marketing Assistant for the Villanova Recreation Department. Group fitness classes have been an important part of my time here at Villanova and something that my friends and I look forward to each semester!
