The Magic Behind the Art

The Magic Behind the Art

By Ashley Mulhare

For those who have ever strolled through an art museum, without pressure or assignment, but simply to walk and admire the art, there is a sense of tranquility and peace within each of the galleries. This phenomenon is not simply by coincidence or from what you ate for breakfast that morning. It has been scientifically proven that spending time immersed in art can reduce stress and anxiety while improving depressive symptoms. Through the act of separating the self from the stressors of everyday life, our brains are able to find art as a distraction from our obstacles. When individuals put themselves in the position to study a work of art along with the artist’s motives and inspirations, it creates a mysterious anecdote where we are forced to use our creativity to learn more about the scene being observed. Through creating this narrative about others or a fantastical world, observers are able to forget their daily struggles and bring themselves into this imaginative realm.

Further, the simple act of creating art every day has been proven to improve mental health as a way of exciting the creative abilities of our brains. Along with reading and writing, drawing or painting allows us to sink into our creative sides and excite that portion of our brain that typically remains at rest during the regular work week. When we overuse our logistical brain, we fall into a state of extreme control which can then lead to anxiety disorders from prolonged stress. It is essential to utilize our creative and imaginative brain in order to turn off our reasonable brain for just a bit of time.

Another benefit of art is seeing its completion and the feelings of accomplishment that accompany that. By putting time and effort into a work of art and seeing it finished with the praise that comes from observers, self-esteem levels increase, producing dopamine in the body which allows the individual to experience feelings of happiness and pleasure. Moments of accomplishment increase concentration and drive in the individual, which in turn will decrease levels of stress and anxiety.

This scientific phenomenon provides reasoning as to why individuals should strive to find a creative outlet within their everyday lives. Whether it’s walking through an art museum, taking a dance class, or painting in nature, allowing your creativity to flourish can improve your mental health and overall happiness.
