Liquid Chlorophyll: All You Need to Know
By Mary Skobieranda
Lately, liquid chlorophyll seems to be popping up all over the media and has been branded as the newest wellness trend with tons of incredible health benefits. This new nutritional wave has been accompanied by dozens of stories about the immense advantages of drinking water with chlorophyll drops. So, what does it really do?
First, “chlorophyll water” isn’t the same as the chlorophyll pigment used in plant photosynthesis, but is rather a derivative of this pigment and a semi-synthetic supplement called chlorophyllin which is able to dissolve in water. People often add chlorophyll drops to their water, which has the added benefit of extra hydration. However, chlorophyll doesn’t taste like much, so it can be added to any drink you desire!
It is known that liquid chlorophyll acts as an antioxidant, which can have great beneficial effects through its anti-inflammatory properties. As with any anti-inflammatory, it assists in boosting immune response and promoting a healthy gut. There is some research that supports the supplement’s ability to defend against harmful carcinogens, however the effects are not quite clear.
As for the additional health benefits stated by many following the craze, such as clearing of skin or bloat reduction, there is little actual evidence. There have been minimal studies to test the benefits of liquid chlorophyll on skin, so dermatologists and nutritionists aren’t yet getting behind the trend as a prescribed treatment. There is speculation that many of the stated benefits may come from drinking more water in a day than one might typically, rather than the chlorophyll additive itself.
Although this liquid chlorophyll craze is all over the internet, there is not enough extensive research to support many of the stated health benefits. Additionally, some people may experience unintended side effects like uncomfortable stomach issues. With the lack of scientific evidence to back up the benefits of this supplement, there is not enough information for professionals to recommend for or against drinking liquid chlorophyll. So, in order to get the stated benefits, it is likely most important to maintain a healthy diet and hydrate often!
