Cultivate Your Little Garden

Cultivate Your Little Garden

By Yaoyao Shi

In the past, I was never really a plant person. I would think of my dad raising and taking care of his orchids so carefully every single day, so I thought having plants was such a big commitment for which I didn’t have time. Luckily, I had a lot of time during the pandemic, so I decided to cultivate my own little garden in my apartment. It was a journey of stress, surprises, and joy.

Here are some recommendations for some simple bedroom plants:

1. Snake Plant

The snake plant is the must-have bedroom plant. Unlike many other plants, the snake plant conducts photosynthesis and releases oxygen during night, which contributes to better sleep quality. It purifies air almost better than any other plants.

Snake plants grow vertically, so it’s so convenient that I don’t have to take care of pruning or dropped leaves. It is very easy to maintain snake plants because they don't require bright light or consistent watering. I just water them once every two weeks. Some people don’t like the looks of snake plants which give them the nickname “mother-in-law’s tongue”, but I think they look funky and fun!

2. Pothos

Pothos have heart-shaped and green leaves with white or yellow striations. There are many different types of pothos, such as marble queen, pearls and jade, silver satin, and more.

It is very easy to grow pothos. Although they like direct or indirect bright light and high humidity, they can still survive in low-light and low-humidity environments. I put my pothos on my window sill and they have been growing aggressively along the window sill. They are like natural decorations to my window sill.

3. Dracaena

Dracaenas have long and strappy leaves. Similar but also different from spider plants, my dracaenas have some pretty red marking on their green leaves. They add some pop of colors to my bedroom.

Dracaenas are also easy to maintain because they can survive under bright direct or indirect light, and I just make sure to keep their soil moisturized.

4. ZZ Plant

ZZ plants are another great plant for vertical-growing space in addition to the snake plant. ZZ plants have wide, glossy, and dark green leaves. They are extremely easy to grow, and they can tolerate low-light environments and low humidity.

ZZ plants purify air and remove toxins like xylene, toluene, and benzene. If you plan to move to a new place, a ZZ plant would be a great addition to your bedroom!

5. Monstera

As shown on many tapestries and etsy home decorations, monstera is the aesthetic plant to have in your bedroom. Also known as swiss cheese plant, monstera has slits and holes in its leaves. Monstera adds characteristics to your room with its unique and cute leaves.

Monstera loves bright indirect light and can tolerate occasional missed watering. It’s perfect to put them on top of a shelf as a decoration!
