In the health and wellness world, CBD is gaining momentum and stirring up some controversy, especially because of increases in legalized recreational marijuana use. The possible health benefits of CBD oil extend beyond that controversy. But what is CBD exactly and what can it be used for?

CBD oil is a natural, plant-based oil containing chemicals called cannabinoids which are “feel good” molecules. These molecules are naturally made by the body when we are feeling relaxed or happy, and they are released when we sleep and exercise as well.

There are so many different forms of CBD. Cannabidiol can be extracted from both hemp and marijuana plants, so it can really differ in terms of how much CBD and THC is extracted. If the CBD is coming from hemp plants, they only contain small amounts of THC that don’t produce any psychoactive effects. CBD coming from marijuana plants, though, can contain differing amounts of THC that can produce unwanted effects. The three main types of CBD are: isolate which only contains CBD, full spectrum which contains other compounds from the cannabis plant that include THC, and broad spectrum which has other compounds from the cannabis plant that don’t include THC.

Other studies have shown that when cannabinoids including THC and CBD are taken together, the therapeutic effect is maximized. This is known as the entourage effect. This entices people to choose full spectrum products more, especially since CBD can also counteract the negative effects caused by THC. Broad spectrum products also provide the therapeutic benefits of the entourage effect without the psychoactive effects of THC.

As for the research behind CBD’s effectiveness for treating anxiety and insomnia, it is still in its infancy. There is also not much research behind its long term effects, especially on a daily basis over the course of years. Yet there is a lot of research being done now, specifically by the National Institute of Health. And many experts are still optimistic that CBD can be useful for mental health conditions. Currently, research has indicated that CBD can help reduce anxiety in people with generalized anxiety disorder by changing the way your brain’s receptors respond to serotonin. Other early studies done with animals show that CBD can reduce stress, induce sleep for those with insomnia, have potential antidepressant effects, and decrease physiological effects of anxiety as well.

Before using any type of CBD supplement, first consult your prescribing physician or psychiatrist because CBD can interact with other psychiatric medications that could cause negative side effects or other health problems. CBD can have its benefits and may appear to be well-tolerated, but it can also have side effects, such as mood changes, appetite changes, nausea, and drowsiness. So, it is important to talk to your doctor if you are thinking of taking CBD. Your healthcare provider can help monitor your symptoms and even recommend a product with a dosage that is appropriate for you.
