Want to up your breakfast game?

Want to up your breakfast game?

By Sam Washburn

You’ve probably heard, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!” more times than you would like to admit. Breakfast is an important meal, but it’s also difficult to navigate. Sometimes you wake up and you’re not hungry at all, or sometimes you’ll wake up starving but won’t have time to prepare a satisfying meal. Either way, eating some form of breakfast every morning is a great habit to form.

There are many benefits that can come from eating a filling breakfast on the daily. First, eating breakfast can increase your energy levels, leading to more productivity in the morning that continues throughout the rest of the day. Eating a bigger breakfast can also reduce snacking throughout the rest of the day. Snacking can often lead to headaches and fatigue, while also not leaving you feeling full. Though mornings are hectic, prioritizing breakfast is important.

Here is a recipe that time after time continues to keep me full and energized, while also tasting delicious:

-   1 slice of Dave’s Thin Sliced Bread, toasted

-   ¼ mashed avocado, seasoned with salt and pepper

-   1 fried egg

-   1 slice of honey-glazed turkey

-   Frank’s RedHot Buffalo Sauce

This recipe takes less than five minutes to prepare. I start by toasting my bread and throwing a whisked egg onto a frying pan. I always season the egg with salt and pepper. Once one side of the egg is cooked, I flip it over and lay a slice of honey-glazed turkey on top. I usually buy this turkey from the deli section of the grocery store, like Giant or Acme. Next, I mash ¼ of an avocado using a fork. Seasoning the avocado with a generous amount of salt and pepper makes an enormous difference in terms of flavor. Once the bread is toasted, I spread the avocado on the toast and add the fried egg and turkey on top. Finally, I always top it off with Frank’s RedHot Buffalo Sauce, but you can omit this step if you’re not huge on spiciness.

Not only is this breakfast quick to make and delicious, but it offers macronutrients from the three main groups: carbs, proteins, and fats. While everybody differs in terms of their needs for each of these three groups, it’s important to incorporate each of these macronutrients into your diet. Carbs provide you with energy, proteins keep you full longer, and fats store essential vitamins while also providing energy.

Even if you don’t have a kitchen in your living area, you can still recreate this meal using the food in the dining halls. Swap the fried egg for scrambled eggs, ask for turkey from the deli, and bring your own avocado or buy one from Second Storey! This go-to breakfast recipe helped me realize that breakfast is truly the most important (and best tasting!) meal of the day. Enjoy!
