Getting Back Into Reading

Getting Back Into Reading

By Catherine Livigni

Reading used to be the single most important thing in my life. I was the kid that preferred reading to going outside some days. I could sit with a book for hours at a time and I would be happy.

As I got older, my love of reading never changed. Other things just took priority over reading for pleasure. Schoolwork, friends, clubs, and everything else simply began to cloud my days with never-ending to-do lists. Sadly, I know this is something with which a lot of people can relate.

As quarantine has slowed down life this past month, whether I like it or not, I find myself with a lot more free time. I’ve taken this time to get back into reading, and I’m really excited about it. The problem, however, is that it’s been so long that I don’t know where to start. I used to be so up to date with my favorite authors and book series, but now I’m lost. So, I have begun to scour the internet in search of book recommendations, and after taking many to heart, I decided that I’d make one for myself and maybe be able to help someone who’s in search of a good book, too.

1. Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

One of my favorite books and also one of my favorite TV shows! It follows the “Monterey Five,” a group of mothers connected through their children, and their story of murder and mischief in the tranquil town of Monterey, California. It’s a story of ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the little lies that can turn lethal.

 2.    Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you had the life you always dreamed of? Well, this book gives you the answer. It tells the story of the life of physics professor Jason Dessen and what could’ve been. It’s a novel about choices, paths not taken, and how far one will go to claim the lives they dream of. It’s a mind-bending sci-fi thriller that will leave you speechless once you’re done.

 3.    Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

Another amazing book with an equally amazing TV show. It’s about two very different families living in affluent Shaker Heights, Ohio, that are brought together through their children. It’s a psychological mystery that explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, and the ferocious nature of motherhood.

4.    Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

A mystery, coming-of-age novel that simultaneously tells the story of “Marsh Girl” Kya Clark and follows a murder investigation of a local celebrity. It’s a beautiful and haunting novel depicting a celebration of nature and a savageness of murder all in one narrative. It’s the type of book that you can’t put down until you reach its iconic ending.

5.    We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

I actually have not read this book, but it’s next on my list. It’s a psychological thriller that I have heard many, many, many good things about, especially its ending! I encourage you to check it out, too.
