Four Feelings You Still (and it's okay to!) Get Senior Move In Day

Four Feelings You Still (and it's okay to!) Get Senior Move In Day

By Anne Standfest

1. Excited

As a senior in college, wherever you go to school is ultimately your favorite place in the world at this point. You know the campus like the back of your hand. You have your favorite meal on campus (for me, it’s the “Wall Street Special” from XC) and that specific treadmill at the gym (mine’s in the corner where no one can see me).  And let’s not forget, this is where your friends, basically family, gathers together for one last year. One last year of being in the same place, never having to walk more than five feet to hang with your best friend or get the mac and cheese from the Wawa down the road. Regardless of your experiences in college, somewhere in your heart, this place is a small part of your home.

2. Overwhelmed

The feeling begins way before school even starts. September hasn’t even begun and you suddenly have a stack of textbooks and notebooks piled on your desk. Once again, you have to figure out how to juggle your social life with your academic life. It all of a sudden feels like your 9-5 summer internship was easier. Oh yeah, and on top of all of that, it’s time to get a job. It’s time to prepare to figure out how to survive in the “real world.” It feels like everyone already has a job lined up and they can sit back to enjoy the year. Well, for one, I don’t have a job either. And, two, we aren’t the only ones. Studies show that around eighty-seven percent of college students feel overwhelmed with all that they have to do. So next time you think you’re alone, remember how many people are feeling the exact same way. Everything will fall into place and your routine will become more manageable.

3. Lonely

I know what you’re thinking: at this point everyone has found their absolute best friend in the world in college. Well guess what? Some people haven’t and it’s OK. There are absolutely no requirements of college. Make of it what YOU want to make of it and don’t let what people around you are doing blur your vision to the incredible opportunities school has to offer. But hey, I get it. I am a senior, leaving alone. I feared what I would say to people when they asked where I was living because I didn’t want to be the “loser that lived alone.” I always told myself, “you should have friends to live with by your senior year of college.” But again, there are no requirements. Personally, over my past three years here, I have learned that I am happier living alone. That doesn’t at all mean I don’t have friends. So, its ok if you’re still struggling to adjust to school even when you are no longer a freshman.

4. Sad but Happy

To all the college seniors out there, it’s our LAST year, our last first day has come and gone. Soak up every second of this year, every second of every single one of your feelings. Try to be aware of feelings but do not let them overtake you. Embrace who you are and leave your own mark on your college or university. We will shed plenty of tears from sadness, happiness, and every emotion in-between. As sad as it is that it’s the last year of school before entering the “real world,” take some of your time and dedicate it to appreciating yourself and everything you have done. College is hard, and you will have your saddest and happiest moments here. So take it all in, even the sad ones, because in the end all of it will be part of your happiness.
