Finding the Right Workout for You
By Lauren Brady
Whether you’re new to campus or a graduating senior, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is extremely important, especially when assignments build up. When deciding your activity of choice, it is also important to remember that you’re not limited to one spot on or off campus.
Here are some things to consider while navigating the workout world — you can incorporate after graduation as well!
1. Time
Time is money! Classes and assignments can consume a real chunk of your week. If you’re not aware of how much time you spend on your phone or relaxing on the couch, it is easy to believe that you don’t have enough time to exercise. I recommend that everyone takes a look at their class and work schedule and circle the chunks of free time. For example, a half hour in the middle of the day could be spent running on the treadmill, and an hour could be spent at a group fitness class. Even if you have only one weekday available to take some time for yourself, use the weekends as an opportunity to start your day on the right foot.
2. Money
Many off-campus spots like SoulCycle and Bulldog Yoga are frequented by Villanova students and provide unique opportunities to stay active. However, if you’re looking to save money, consider options on campus that can be just as rewarding. Going for a run on the Davis treadmills or around campus is just as intensive as a spin class. Grabbing a yoga mat and watching a yoga class on YouTube can be more personal than a group class. When I wasn’t familiar with the gym equipment my freshman year, I even did small HIIT workouts in my dorm room without equipment. In short, you don’t always need to pay extra for something available to you on campus.
3. Your personal goals
If you’re looking to build a solid routine, it is so important that you consider your health goals so you can see your desired results after a month, a semester, or a whole year. Looking to tone your core and legs? Consider strength training/weight lifting that focuses on legs and cardio. This could be anything from running, to using the elliptical, to cycling. Looking to build muscle? Consider weight lifting or taking classes like barre3. It is also important to incorporate a healthy diet to supplement your workouts. Protein is key to staying full longer and for building muscle. Whether these goals are short-term or long-term, taking even the smallest steps go a long way in laying the foundation for healthy habits in the future.
Villanova has so much to offer its students on campus, and those looking for a change of scenery have plenty of options off campus. Whichever path you choose, I hope it allows you to manage your time well, use your money wisely, and achieve your goals.
